IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTICE (31 March 2008) A security bug has been found in the Covcell whiteboard. To correct this problem, download the latest version:  http://isdev.odg.cc/cwhiteboard.zip.  You do not need to uninstall the original and reinstall (though this will also fix the problem); it is enough to overwrite your mod/cwhiteboard directory with the zip file contents  -- if you've made some special changes you should check the new.php file within it for changes to yours and four "print_r(...)" lines should be removed to fix it. [Special thanks to Jörg Knegten for finding and alerting us of this bug!]

The Covcell Project works in the field of language learning and teaching online and of open software development in education. It is funded by the Minerva Action of the European Union and runs from October 2005 until September 2007. The partnership includes members from Iceland, Germany, Italy and the Basque Country in Spain.

The overall objective of the project was to address the need, established in current work on on-line language learning, for a virtual environment in which language learners can meet and interact in the process of language study -- a "virtual campus" for language learning. The project was based on a constructivist approach to language learning and sought to facilitate cohort-supported, task-based learning in an online environment. The Project did not seek to reinvent the wheel in this area but to leverage the considerable developments that are already underway and make a contribution towards the ultimate goal of the â€œvirtual campusâ€. Its strategy has therefore been to adopt an already-existing Learning Management System which is compatible with our aims and sufficiently sophisticated in its architecture and to add to it extra tools in support of constructivist cohort-oriented language learning.

The Learning Management System which that was adopted is Moodle (to find out more about Moodle, click here; to meet the online community, click here); Moodle is also firmly grounded in a constructivist philosophy; it is open-source and free to use; and it has a flexible modular architecture. We are delighted that Covcell has a space within the moodle.org community as part of the Language Teaching course - join us here!
